Martha Johnson

Born in Toronto, Martha Johnson studied psychology and theatre at York University before becoming a founding member and lead vocalist of the art pop band Martha and the Muffins, which formed in 1977 during the early years of the punk/new wave scene on Queen Street West in Toronto. MatM was signed by Virgin Records UK and recorded their first album, Metro Music at The Manor Studios near Oxford, England in 1979. After Echo Beach became a top ten single around the world in 1980 the band toured extensively in Britain, Europe and North America. Since then, Martha and the band have released eight studio albums internationally, three of which were co-produced with Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel).
