500 Years of Night
Since moving to Toronto from Mexico, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Quique Escamilla has quickly made a mark on the local scene, collaborating and touring with the likes of Jim Cuddy and Danny Michel. His following will spread via charming full-length debut album, 500 Years Of Night, a record as warm as a Caribbean vacation. "Presa Facil" mixes ska and Latin stylings, while other tracks draw upon traditional Mexican musical styles, rock, reggae and folk. The fact he sings primarily in Spanish means some of his socially conscious lyrics may not connect with the Anglo audience, but the music surely will. Escamilla launched the disc at Lula Longe in Toronto this week, and he'll play the Vancouver Island Music Fest in July.
