Toronto folk-rocker Al Grantham cites the likes of early Dylan, Jeff Tweedy and punk rock as inspirations. Also a member of indie-rockers Low Hanging Lights, he's a perceptive wordsmith and he comes up with intriguingly offbeat melodies and arrangements on this self-titled second solo album. A key collaborator on the disc is Kaleb Hikele (The Sun Harmonic), who assists on the production and arrangement and plays multiple instruments. Female vocals, bassoon, cello, trumpet and banjo add to the sonic variety. Quirkily compelling.
Grantham plays a Guelph gig at Jimmy Jazz on January 17.
