Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

The previous record from post-rock revolutionaries Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!, won the 2013 Polaris Music Prize. A controversial choice, but a well-merited one, in this scribe's opinion. They're back at the top of their game with new record Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress, another obtusely-entitled but riveting collection of mind-bending instrumental rock that is symphonic in scope. At around 40 minutes, it's shorter than previous double-album epics, but no less compelling. The four songs make up one long composition, and they take you for an intense sonic journey. The fact that the exclusive pre-release album stream was with one of the world's best newspapers, The Guardian, testifies to the global impact Godspeed now has. Long may they speed.

Godspeed play an extensive 21-date European tour (April 7 to May 1) and perform at Calgary's Sled Island fest (June 25-26).
