Black to Gold
Vancouver-based rockers Dear Rouge, fronted by married musical couple Drew and Danielle McTaggart, must have known that they were on to a good thing when they won the $100,000+ Peak Performance Project prize in 2012. No surprise then that they were swiftly signed to one of the majors, Universal Music Canada. Now with the release of the band’s long-awaited debut full-length, Black to Gold, we finally get to hear what they’re capable of. Shimmering hooks are aplenty here – any one of the synth-rock tracks within feels like it would do just fine on rock radio (save perhaps the somber piano ballad “October Second”). The regular comparisons to CanRock heroes Metric feel appropriate even still, and given enough time this band could have a Fantasies-level success story disc of their own.
Dear Rouge have plenty of Canadian dates scheduled for the spring and summer, including May 8 in Toronto for the CMW Radio Awards. Check their website for full tour info.
