Blankets

Jenny Allen’s third and most recent album, Blankets, is as rural as a prairie farmhouse, in an urbane sort of way. She’s a smart conversational lyricist who employs three separate voices to deliver the 10 songs included, backed by a band that snaps, slaps and pops throughout.  Reference points include alt-folk and honky-tonk country. Adding lustre is producer John Ellis’s accomplished detailing on electric guitar, pedal and steel guitar, accordion, banjo, mandolin and bass. “Beautiful Mess” and “No Turning Back” are strong cards, but her ace in this deck is “Bigger Fish”.
