Over the past 20 years, eccentric maverick songsmith Friendly Rich (Marsella) has earned a cult following in Europe as well as Canada for his offbeat and musically and lyrically witty material. The fact he composed background music for three seasons of MTV's The Tom Green Show is a clue to his refreshingly unorthodox sensibility. He's a prolific recording artist, with most of his earlier 12 releases also featuring his band The Lollipop People, but Bountiful is out under his own name. For a taste of Friendly Rich's quirky vision, check out "Pierre Trudeau's Train", a number reminding us of Frank Zappa, or first single "Sausage Samba", inspired by a German seller of counterfeit sausages (it's video has scored nearly 120k hits). He and his band are currently touring Europe until July 13, with a date at Toronto's Horseshoe set for July 24.
