Carey's Cold Spring
Quite the intense back story to new Frog Eyes album Carey's Cold Spring. Mainman Carey Mercer recorded it while his father was dying of cancer. Shortly after, Mercer himself was diagnosed with throat cancer (happily, now reported as gone). He put the album (their sixth) up on Bandcamp, it recently snagged a spot on the Polaris longlist, and now new label Paper Bag have given it a proper release, offering it on vinyl and CD. Still sonically adventurous, it is a mite more reflective in tone than earlier FE work, and has a wide emotional range. "It's the sound of a person grinding his or her teeth in the night, but it's also the sound of the birds in the morning, I hope”, says Mercer. It reaffirms he is a ferocious talent, one we can be glad will be creating much more in the future.
Frog Eyes is now out playing North American dates, some with labelmates P.S. I Love You. Head to Paper Bag Records for more.
