Toronto sextet The Boxcar Boys are a high-energy and musically accomplished roots ensemble. Their diverse sound draws upon Dixieland jazz, klezmer and old-time folk, and it has earned them
a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination award. Earlier albums Don’t Be Blue (2011) and Rye Whiskey (2012) earned rave reviews and we're sure new disc Cicada Ball will follow suit. We spied some recognizable names in the lineup in Rob Teehan (Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Heavyweights Brass Band) and Laura C. Bates (Trent Severn), and their comrades are equally skilled. Strong group originals fit alongside spirited versions of traditional tunes.
The group launched the album at Toronto's Burdock Music Hall last week and are now touring the Maritimes. Check their site for details.
