Collxtion I

For years, Allie Hughes was a not-so-well-kept secret in the Toronto music scene, performing as a pop singer, penning tunes for film & tv, and working on her craft as one of the inaugural participants in the Slaight Music Residency (not to mention being a prominent contestant on the talent competition How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?). Allie moved to LA and reinvented herself as the mysterious Allie X, a persona and brand readymade for the age of social media, and a fresh voice, capable of offering real forward-thinking pop. Last year’s single “Catch” got an enthusiastic nod from Katy Perry and established Allie X as a major artist to watch. She’s collated some early singles and similarly themed new ones for a debut EP, Collxtion I. Here pop is just a suggestion for her, or a launching pad for her more interesting concepts. The hooks are anthemic and downright infectious, and the gritty synths are trendy, but it’s the GIFS and cross-media interactivity where X shows her true strengths. Unyielding in it’s approach and immediately effective. This is exactly what the pop world needs right now.
