Wagner Petrilli is a Toronto-based Brazilian guitarist and composer, and Confissao is his debut solo album. He's no novice, though, having honed his chops on the local Latin and jazz scene for the past 16 years. The record was launched in grand style at Lula Lounge as part of the recent Toronto Jazz Festival, where he was accompanied by some top-notch local Brazilian artists. The album is graced by such A-list players and singers as George Koller, Andy Ballantyne, Don Thompson, Aline Morales, Kevin Turcotte, Reg Schwager, Filó Machado, and many more, with Mark Duggan on hand as producer. A string quartet adds lushness, and the signature melodicism of Brazilian music is to the fore here. Samba, bossa nova, and choro are amongst the styles explored with skill. A superb outing worthy of JUNO consideration.
