Deep In the Iris

After losing a founding band member, Montreal-based alt-electro trio Braids released their second full-length Flourish//Perish, an ambient and chilly disc, gorgeous in its’ approach but impenetrable at times. For their heavily-awaited follow-up Deep In the Iris, the band spent time rediscovering the relationships with one another, bonding over recording session retreats in Arizona, Vermont, and upstate New York. The differences are palpable; there’s a new-found vulnerability in the songwriting and lead singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s vocals are no longer engulfed by the ocean of electronic blips, loops, and synths – praise should be given to producer Damian Taylor (Bjork) for pushing the band out of their comfort zone. While previous efforts required multiple spins to really appreciate its’ complexities, this one is immediately effective. A career highlight.

Braids is embarking on an extensive tour with multiple Canadian dates scheduled through the spring, including May 13 at Bar le Ritz PDB in Montreal and May 14 at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Details on the band’s Facebook
