Veteran art-punk duo Mecca Normal (guitarist David Lester and vocalst Jean Smith) have been dishing up their uncompromising and aggressive yet poetic material for a full three decades now. They remain in fine form on the provocatively entitled new album Empathy for the Evil, again mixing the personal and political. Most of these songs emerged from Smith's two unpublished novels. The album was recorded in Miami Beach and produced and mixed by notable U.S. underground figure Kramer (Galaxie 500, Low). Abrasive and heady stuff.
Mecca Normal play Vancouver's Media Club on Nov. 15, followed by California dates.
