Fifty Shades of Red
Still best known to many as a member of folk heroes Spirit Of The West, Linda McRae has been seriously undervalued as a solo artist. Now Nashville-based, she's an eloquent songwriter, convincingly gritty singer, and skilled multi-instrumentalist, and it's to be hoped that new compilation Fifty Shades Of Red will bring new and much-deserved recognition. Out on prestigious folk label Borealis, it's a collection of folk and country-rooted material from her four solo discs. All star accompanists include producer/guitarists Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams) and Colin Linden, The Sojourners, Andrew Cash, Syd Straw, Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy and Bazil Donovan, Richard Bell, and more. Lovely CD package design too. Sixteen Shades of Great, we say.
McRae plays a CD release party at Toronto's Hugh's Room on June 15, followed by an extensive tour of Western Canada. Check her website for details.
