For the People in the Mean Time
Ann Vriend is a stylistically diverse singer/songwriter who has incorporated folk, soul and pop into her material. Her 2003 debut, Soul Unravelling, had real impact, and on new (and seventh) album, For the People in the Mean Time, she dives deep into retro-soul, to great effect. Inspirations include Aretha and Marvin Gaye, and Vriend's songs draw from the grit of urban life. One track here, strong ballad "The Greatest Killer", is a co-write with Dan Hill, a big fan. She is in demand as a performer in Australia, Europe and North America, and this will certainly further her cause. Last year's Ottawa Folk Festival's talent search crowned her "The One". She played Edmonton's Artery on March 20, then flew to Europe for a tour, starting next week.
