Anticipation has been building around the debut album from Reuben And The Dark, and Funeral Sky does not disappoint. Built around the poetic songs and soaring vocals of Reuben Bullock, the album boasts the kind of elegant atmospherics of labelmates Timber Timbre and The Darcys. Killer production by Florence + The Machine drummer Christopher Lloyd Hayden and Toronto wunderkind Stephen Kozmeniuk (Madonna, Nicki Minaj) is the icing on the cake. Reuben Bullock and drummer/brother Distance were raised by a travelling preacher, and that shows in the gospel influences audible here on songs like "Black Water". Simply riveting.
The band play Field Trip in Toronto on June 7, then tour extensively. Festival dates include the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (!), Winnipeg Folk Festival, Folk On The Rocks in Yellowknife and, in October, the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
