Hot So

Roger Gibbs, the  Bajan guitarist/composer and former lead singer of  ‘70s dance band The Sandpebbles, now living in Toronto, performs acoustic calypsos on this 11 song collection, produced by Toronto ethnomusicologist Chris Wilson. Steel drum, accordion, acoustic bass  and wind instruments, and  shak-shaks flavour Gibbs’ mostly original paeans to an era pre-dating the carnality of today’s jumped-up soca and gangsta rhythms.  The rousing  9+ minute “Day-oh” and ambrosial “Mastife” are two highlights in a shebang that is as pleasurable as the accidental discovery of a forgotten 1961 Krug champagne in the wine cellar.
