I Really Like You - Single

It doesn’t feel like it’s been three years on since the release of “Call Me Maybe”, the smash hit single from Mission B.C.-bred pop star Carly Rae Jepsen. Probably because that song was everywhere; highly visible placements, late-night shows, web parodies… the official music video even has a whopping 651 million plays to date. So her first major single after the hiatus, “I Really Like You”, is naturally going to be compared to the former chart-topper – but if any pop single stands a chance of reaching similar heights, it’s this one. In Chilly Gonzales’ pop masterclass analysis of Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off", he asserts that a quick way to achieving an earworm is a childlike simplistic melody, rhythmic displacement, and excessive repetition. There’s no doubt that Jepsen’s track shares these attributes; the word “really” is uttered nearly 70 times. Pair that with a soaring hook and a ‘80s bubblegum pop vibe, and it has all the workings of a incredibly catchy mega-hit. No maybes about it.

Jepsen revealed via Twitter that the official “I Really Like You” music video will premiere later this week and feature Tom Hanks. No word yet on whether the single will appear on a full-length album.
