If I've Only One Time Askin'
Earlier albums Sleep Beneath The Willow, Workin' For The Music Man and Come Cry With Me established Daniel Romano (ex-Attack In Black) in the top tier of rootsy Canadian singer/songwriters, and brilliant new album If I've Only One Time Askin' is shaping up as his best yet. The initial emphasis on his look and fashion sense was a mite distracting (as with a clear reference point, Dwight Yoakam), but there's no doubt there is substance under the style. The self-produced record features countrypolitan strings, steel (from ace Aaron Goldstein), accordion, horns and fiddle, but Romano's baritone voice and well-crafted honky-tonk tunes remain centre-stage. Could this masterpiece become the first-ever real country record to make the Polaris shortlist (he's made the longlist twice)? Interesting facts: Romano is an in-demand graphic artist who has designed album covers for City and Colour, The Weather Station, M Ward, and many more. He's also a talented producer, with City and Colour's Bring Me Your Love amongst his credits.
Romano is now signed to premier Americana label New West Records, and is playing extensively in the U.S. in August and September. He plays the Wolfe Island Festival near Kingston on Aug. 7 and his hometown of Welland, ON, on Aug. 28.
