In the A.M. Wilds
Montreal-based psychedelic rockers The High Dials are a band transformed on their fifth record, In The A.M. Wilds. Some of this can be attributed to what had happened in the three years since they originally announced the album's recording sessions; perhaps most notably, the band’s line-up changed drastically, leaving only vocalist Trevor Anderson and guitarist Robbie MacArthur to pen the material, along with the help of a revolving set of musicians. The sonic differences might also be a result of bringing in producer Marc Bell (The Fugees, Bran Van 3000, We Are Wolves), who implored the duo to dig deeper into their influences, and a product of Anderson’s other gig as a DJ in Montreal clubs. While not explicitly a party record, In The A.M. Wilds plays more with groove and dancier rhythms than earlier efforts, and is delivered with a vital post-punk urgency. Longtime supporters of this band include Springsteen’s guitarist Steven Van Zandt (he’s plugged the band for years on his satellite radio program) and one of psychedelic pop’s greatest living legends, Rod Argent of the Zombies.
The High Dials will support The Sam Roberts Band in Toronto on February 14 at Massey Hall, with more dates to come. Head to the band’s website for info.
