You can bet Alberta-born violinist/songwriter/singer Judy Kang has stories to tell. The classically-trained virtuoso is skilled enough that The Canada Council loaned her a Stradivarius, but she is versatile enough to have toured with Lady Gaga and Ryuichi Sakamoto and worked with Pierre Boulez. Kang is now focusing on her solo career with this self-titled new album. It defies easy definition, drawing upon classical, electronica, hiphop and rock elements. She frames her imaginative compositions with vocals suggestive of a more restrained Bjork. Tracks go from the yin of the rhythmic "You" to the yang of ambient soundscapes and breathy vocals on "Dream" and atmospheric instrumental "Electric Sun". An exciting introduction.
