Missy Elliot - Single
Toronto-based rap veteran D.O. aka Defy the Odds certainly holds a number of titles – label pres, producer, motivational speaker, one half of duo Art of Fresh (along with Slakah the Beatchild), Guinness World Record holder for longest freestyle – and now he’ll add autobiographical composer to the list, with his forthcoming full-length album, Duane Gibson. Entitled after his birth name, many of the tracks will be reflections on his past – we’ve already heard reflective tracks "Rookie and the Vet" and "Follow Me", and now we get to hear the latest single, “Missy Elliott”. Originally released on last year’s mixtape Home for the Summer, the track is an on-point homage to the trailblazing female solo artist, clearly an inspiration for Gibson. It was actually conceived of before her Super Bowl half-time show resurgence. “It was good timing,” D.O. said in a statement. “We had the videoshoot for the song set up for the winter, next thing you know Missy Elliott comes back on the scene.”
The throwback music video can be seen here. Duane Gibson will be available on May 26, through his Northstarr Records label.
