Joyful Talk is the latest brainchild of the very versatile Jay Crocker. Formerly a key player on the Calgary scene via such acclaimed projects as Recipe for a Small Planet, Ghostkeeper (once a Polaris longlister) and No More Shapes, he is now based on the East Coast. Crocker is equally at home in jazz, avant-garde, pop and electronica settings. The adventurous new Joyful Talk album, MUUIXX, was recorded in his home studio on 14 custom built instruments, and it's avant-garde approach shows the influence of the likes of Fred Frith and Derek Bailey. A vinyl version of the album is out via Backward Music, but there's nothing backward-sounding about this progressive release.
