Paper Lions spent a few years out of the spotlight, after a necessary name change and an unfortunate public spat with their now previous record label. But on My Friends, the band’s first official album in six years, the quartet is still deserving of being the Maritime indie pop group to keep an eye on. The ten charming tracks herein are packed wall-to-wall sugar-coated pop with infectiously hum-along melodies; the kind that Hall and Oates became celebrated for at a time when these guys were mere lion cubs. Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, Mother Mother) offers his west-coast zeal to the production, giving tunes such as “Ghostwriters” and “Pull Me In” a lush sheen.
