New York Stories
Upon its recent release, New York Stories, the third jazz-based recording from veteran singer/songwriter Micah Barnes, went straight into the Top Five on iTunes National Jazz Chart. Deservedly so, for this a highly accomplished collection of songs inspired by the Big Apple (has any other city inspired more songs and records than NYC?). Released a year ago, the title track single also scored high on jazz charts and helped Barnes win as Best Jazz Act at the Toronto Indie Awards. Produced by Micah and brother Daniel Barnes (they're sons of famed composer/musician Milton Barnes), recorded by ace engineer John 'Beetle' Bailey, and featuring top T.O. players, the album has a rich sound to complement Barnes' expressive vocals (former membership in The Nylons confirmed the man can really sing!). A stint living in NYC helped birth these songs, as did the music of Cole Porter, Sondheim and the Brill Building writers. In fact, Barnes has also been touring a successful new show, Stand By Me: The Music of the Brill Building, one also featuring fellow Nylons member Billy Newton-Davis.
Barnes performs the new album at Sunday brunch shows at Toronto's Jazz Bistro (June 7, 14, 21, and 28) and at other Ontario venues. Check his site for details.
