Porch Song Chronicles

This scribe has long been a fan of Toronto singer/songwriter/actor Elana McMurtry and her earlier band Palomino, so it's a pleasure to learn she has finally completed her debut solo album, Porch Song Chronicles. Her sultry and supple voice sounds right at home in songs that incorporate noir cabaret, country, jazz and rock elements, and she is more than ably abetted by local ace players such as James Robertson (her key collaborator), Brian Kobayakawa, Andrew Collins, Sly Juhas, Blake Manning, and Tim Thorney (who recorded this with Adam Fair). Don't just take our word on McMurtry's talent: here's what Luke Doucet had to say: "Elana’s voice sounds great. There's a Patti Smith/Sinead O'Connor/Cat Power vibe, but her sound is definitely her own."
