For three albums, Midland ON-bred indie rockers Born Ruffians proved they were scrappy and eager, and unquestionably worthy of the fanbase they had amassed. But Ruff, the band’s latest full-length, is the sound of a band really coming into their own. The new material is energetic and vibrant, impassioned and played with purpose. Tracks like highlights “& On & On & On” and “Don’t Live Up” are catchy as all hell, with much of the attention cast on frontman’s Luke Lalonde’s twitchy yelps and dejected lyrics, especially when juxtaposed against the upbeat arrangements. When compared to Birthmarks, the new album is raw and unpredictable. Look for it to make year-end favourite lists and possibly Juno and Polaris nods.
Born Ruffians will embark on a North America tour at the end of October after returning from Europe. Check their website for full details.
