Teenage pop-rock songstress Nikki W. is quickly sparking an industry buzz, and debut EP Sad Generation shows why. She has big-name producer Gavin Brown (Metric, Billy Talent) on board, and he co-wrote the material with her, imparting high production values on the recorded results. The skilful mix of guitars and synths does bring Metric to mind, and the vocals are strong. At just 16, she is not strictly a novice, noting that “I’ve been in and out of studios since I was 12. It’s kind of like a second home to me. I love going in and writing songs there, or just recording a track.” Clearly an artist to watch.
She plays The Drake in Toronto on Aug. 25.
