Send the Nightingale
Those on the T.O. roots music scene have been aware of the powerhouse voice of Samantha Martin for a while now. As fan Serena Ryder says, "she'll tear your heart out one note at a time." Look for word to spread with the release of Martin's best album yet, Send the Nightingale, one already charting on college radio. It features her new group Delta Sugar, one comprising fluent guitarist Mikey McCallum (Martin also plays a mean axe) and backing singers Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb. This unconventional lineup proves ideal for the songs Martin is now writing, tunes that fuse blues, Southern soul and gospel, all delivered with Joplinesque fervour. Some of these songs are reprised from last year's Mississippi Sun EP, but the brand new material is equally strong.
We witnessed Delta Sugar dazzle the crowd at their CD release show at Toronto's Lula Lounge last week (Ryder was in attendance), and Martin then showcased at Folk Alliance in Kansas City.
