Some Version of the Truth

As a talented trumpeter/vocalist/songwriter, Tara Kannangara is a triple threat. All these skills are neatly showcased on an excellent full-length debut album, Some Version of the Truth. She defines her sound as "Groove-Based Indie Jazz," for elements of melodic indie pop are seamlessly meshed with fresh jazz grooves. Her playing is fluent and mellow, her vocal style refreshingly unaffected. Kannangara's open-minded stylistic approach is shown by her cover of a Thom Yorke tune, "Atoms for Peace", while her original compositions are striking. The album was recorded at noted Toronto studio Canterbury Sound with Jeremy Darby. Of note: This summer she performed a full set at an Ella Fitzgerald tribute at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Kannangara also plays in the group of Elizabeth Shepherd, a kindred spirit.

She recently completed a western Canada tour in support of the album, and has a hometown CD release show at The Burdock in Toronto on Nov. 14.
