Songs in the Dark
Taken as a collective whole, the McGarrigle, Wainwright and Roche families have had a huge impact on contemporary folk music, intersecting in myriad ways. The latest combination is the teaming of half-sisters Martha Wainwright (daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright) and Lucy Wainwright Roche (daughter of Loudon and Suzzy Roche). Songs in the Dark, their first musical collaboration, is a lovely collection of songs that combine sweet lullabye-style melodies with some darker lyrical fare. Song selection ranges from an English murder ballad ("Long Lankin") to tunes from Loudon (the powerful "Lullabye"), Kate, Richard Thompson and others. The two voices harmonize in beguiling fashion, as on the fresh take on the classic "El Condor Pasa". A perfect Xmas gift choice for the folk fan on your list.
We caught the Sisters charm the audience at Toronto's Rivoli earlier this week. They play City Halls in Glasgow on Jan. 25, while Martha has a solo show at Maison Symphonique in Montreal on Dec. 6 (a benefit for the Kate McGarrigle Fund).
