We've praised the melodic merits of The Provincial Archive in these pages on quite a few earlier occasions, and we're now also suitably impressed with their new eponymous EP. The band is now stripped down to a trio, and their sound has simultaneously veered into '90s era indie rock, compared to the folkier leanings of earlier releases. "Bad Connection" suggests Sloan meets Weezer to us, and other tunes are equally robust. The songwriting skills remain razor-sharp, and producer Nik Kozub (Shout Out Out Out Out, Veal) captures their energy nicely.
The band play Edmonton's Studio 96 on Dec. 18 and The Arden Theatre in St. Albert, AB, on Feb. 26.
