The Raven Smiled
Ontario-born and raised and now NYC-based, singer/songwriter Lorraine Leckie has had a fascinating life and career. The former wife of punk icon Steven Leckie (The Viletones), she has released acclaimed earlier albums that had No Depression terming her “the dark princess of the contemporary Greenwich Village folk scene". Her fifth full-length album, The Raven Smiled, is a dramatic and atmospheric work featuring accompaniment by Prague-based violinist Pavel Cingl, and Leckie cites Europe as a key inspiration: "With The Raven Smiled, I wanted to capture the magic of my first European tour - one of the most beautiful times of my entire life". The sound here is a mite sparser than on earlier albums featuring her band Her Demons. Apt reference points here would include Nico, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, but Leckie is clearly a unique artist, and one worthy of more attention from her original home. A bewitching work.
Leckie played an album release show at the Mercury Lounge in New York on September 29.
