Thunder Amongst Us

Heartbeat City is the brainchild of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ian Neufeld La Rue. He released three accomplished solo albums between 2005 and 2010, prior to forming Heartbeat City. On the project's debut album Thunder Amongst Us, he recruits some fine local players (including alumni of Boats and Rusty Matyas of Imaginary Cities) to flesh out his compositions. La Rue produced the record with Les Jupes mainman Michael P Falk, who also recorded and mixed with clarity. There's a nice dynamic range to the material, and cello, violin and backing vocals add texture on some tunes. On the quieter numbers here, like "Walker", "Organ Failure" and "Brophy," there is a distinct resemblance to fellow 'Peggers The Weakerthans, and that's never a bad thing.

Heartbeat City begin a Western Canada on Aug. 13 with a show at Good Will Social Club in Winnipeg. Check heartbeatcity.org for details. We hope they head east too.
