Toccata - Single
When London ON-based producer Overwerk won the second round of the NCM Vista Music Prize, he stopped by the Slaight Music office to pick up a $10k cheque and to chat. During the course of the conversation, he revealed that he actually had no training (or understanding) of formal musical theory and had not employed a physical instrument in any of his compositions (a detail he recounted publicly in his Reddit AMA). Well he seems to have brushed up on his classical chops. “Toccata” is his latest single and the first taste of an upcoming classically influenced EP, set for a fall release. Named after a form of virtuouso keyboard pieces that showcases fast-moving, nimble-finger performances (Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” being the reference point here), Overwerk offers his modern, electro, cinematic take on a true classic.
