Turn Up the Volume - Single

Last year’s full-length Turning Rocks from Trans-atlantic musical duo Thus Owls was a fantastic exercise in building tension and releasing it, and employing cinematic instrumentation in clever ways. The pair, husband and wife duo Erika and Simon Angell, are at it again, ready to release their most experimental statement yet, new EP Black Matter on November 6. It’s the result of collaborations with some world-renowned musicians, including drummers Stefan Schneider (Bell Orchestre, The Luyas) and Liam O’Neill (Doe Eye, Mount Saint), string players Melanie Belair, Melanie Vaugeois, Ligia Paquin, and Annie Gadbois, and Daniel Bjarnson (Sigur Ros) on string arrangements. Early sweeping single “Turn Up the Volume” lets us know what to expect – namely, lush production and dynamic playing, and positively gorgeous song craft. It feels limitless, and is possibly some of their finest work to date.

Thus Owls recently played hometown Montreal shows, and are set to embark on a UK tour with likeminded compatriot Patrick Watson. Let’s hope for more Canadian dates soon.
