Don't let the Afrikaans-style group name and album title fool you. Bosveld is a modern folk ensemble from Ottawa, and the title of full-length debut album Veldbrand means "fields of fire" in that language (mainman Théan Slabbert a.k.a. Velodrones was born in South Africa). The record has been receiving plenty of blogosphere love, with whispers of Polaris potential. We concur, for the album has a quietly mesmerising quality, with interesting soundscapes and arrangements, fluent guitar, and shimmering vocals with a Nick Drake feel. Bosveld are billed as a duo (Slabbert and Jeremy Mulder), but prominent guest players and singers include Pascal OfLaki (Hilotrons), Phil Charbonneau (Scattered Clouds), Jean-François Beauchamp (Amos the Transparent), Jenny Berkel and Olenka.
