Very Good Bad Thing

Hardworking west coast rockers Mother Mother reveal their huge aspirations with their latest (and fifth) LP Very Good Bad Thing. While the five-piece unit has risen to fan fave status over the last part of the decade, regularly churning out quirky alt-rock gems, the prize is stadium-sized now. They’ve signed with one of the majors, Universal Music Canada, employed premiere Can-rock producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Metric, Three Days Grace), and recorded the new album at Toronto’s impressive Noble Street Studios. The hooks here are wall-to-wall, emboldened by their signature harmonies, and the angular guitar riffs still remain, but often take a backseat to pop atmospherics. The penchant they’ve historically displayed for the unpredictable works in their favour, offering some interesting turns for large-scale rock (“Modern Love”, “Get Out the Way”, the title track). Very Good Bad Thing is the sound of indie becoming A-list, and that’s not such a bad thing.

An extensive Canadian tour kicks off in Halifax November 10 at the Forum, with lots of dates scheduled across the country before Christmas. Details here
