Last fall, Peterborough ON-based folk-rockers JJ and the Pillars beat out an impressive 626 competitors and took home the top title of the 102.1 The Edge’s “Next Big Thing Contest”. Prizes included a whopping $35k in cash, a performance opportunity at the CASBY Awards (sharing the stage with the Arkells, Mounties, + Tokyo Police Club), studio time, and a distribution deal with Dine Alone. We now get to hear what the band is made of with their debut disc, Wolves. Definitely a fan-pleasing effort, the eight-track set is a killer showcase for bandleader JJ Thompson’s radio-ready folk-pop hooks and the band’s rock-solid arrangements. Due to popular demand, early single “The Wolves” has been in heavy rotation – expect uptempo second single “Come With Me” to do the same.
JJ and the Pillars will play the Toronto Festival of Beer along with (current Vista Music Prize contestant) Lowell on April 25 and at Taps Brewery in Niagara Falls on May 15.
