Colonel Tom (Parker) has long been a real workhorse on the Toronto old-time country scene, and, as leader of Backstabbers Country Stringband, an important one. His current band The American Pour includes such formidable players as Rob Fenton, Peter Hill, and Nicol Robertson (Devin Cuddy, Whitney Rose) as well as harmony vocalist Alex Pangman (an acclaimed jazz singer and Parker's wife). Co-producer Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith, Rheostatics) recorded this new album, Work.Horse., over a three-year period at his Rooster Studio. The album comprises ten new originals from Parker. Themes of loneliness and heartbreak dominate, but there's real wit and charm in the lyrics and Parker's retro-sounding vocals are always convincing. You can bet this material sounds great live too.
The album was launched at Tom's fave stomping ground, the Cameron House in T.O. last week. For more gigs, check the website.
