You and Me - Single
Earlier this week, the Polaris Prize longlist was narrowed down to the shortlist, revealing critics’ picks for the Canadian albums of the highest integrity for the year. Many of which were repeat offenders; seven out of the ten, including Drake, Arcade Fire, and Owen Pallett were previous nominees. But only one made the cut with a debut – electro R&B producer Jessy Lanza. The Hamilton native’s LP Pull My Hair Back revealed her unique voice and penchant for smooooth jams. UK-based label Hyperdub’s looking to capitalize on her newfound cachet and on their ten-year anniversary with a set of compilation discs, which will include a previously unreleased tune from the songstress. Her early released airy single “You and Me” is propelled by minimal production and diva-esque melismatic cooing, managing to come off as both sweet and tense. Fitting, given the relationship-questioning subject matter.
Hyperdub 10.2 will be released July 21 and will also include the Pull My Hair Back cut “5785021”, and feature contributions from DVA, Ghostface Killah, and Burial.
