Young Bloods - EP

18-year old Alex Fleming, the sole songwriter of Black Atlass, attracted attention with his debut breathy single "Paris" last year (a placement in a Louis Vuitton ad certainly helped). This emerging talent shows that he’s capable of more than a one-off with a new six-track EP, Young Bloods, distributed through A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold Records. The EP is described in a press release as “somewhere in-between modern R&B, experimental electronic production, and classic singer/songwriter confessionals”, which is accurate but doesn’t convey how much it achieves in its sparse approach. The restraint from over-production is what makes it so slick. It’s also downright funky at times, as evidenced on early handclap-driven single, “Blossom”. The Weeknd broke big on his dark R&B approach, there’s no reason Black Atlass can’t do the same.
