Under his primary recording alias Venetian Snares, Aaron Funk made a name for himself as one of the most prominent, prolific, if not finest producers of glitch and breakcore EDM in Canada. But rarely is it mentioned how subtle and melodic his compositions can be – for his latest EP, Your Face, he dials back the blistering fast, inhuman rhythms, letting the synths and sample-based elements breathe. “Former Eagle” is stunning, verging onto ambient (at least for him), and the chilly, “Misericordial” would make a good fit for a video game soundtrack. It’s also worth nothing the appropriately creepy-yet-gorgeous striking album artwork – which has my vote for cover of the year, thus far. After the uncharacteristic long wait for last year’s full-length My Love is a Bulldozer, VS seems invigorated, and uninterested in repeating himself.
