Video of the moment
Every week we select a music video by a Canadian group or artist who have recently been reviewed by our editorial team. If you'd like to suggest a video for consideration, you can send us a message using this form.
With the annual JUNO Awards fast approaching (March 15 in Hamilton), we thought we'd mix things up a little this week by presenting the five Canadian music clips nominated in the 2015 Video of the Year category.
The nominees are: "Preach" by Sonreal. Directed by Dane Collison (Above, 10K views)
"Lost You" by Zeds Dead ft. Twin Shadow. Directed by Grandson & Son (VIEW,1.78 million views)
"Guilt Trip" by PUP. Directed by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and Chandler Levack (VIEW, 108k views)
"Hideaway" by Kiesza. Directed by Kiesza, Blayre Ellestad, Rami Afuni and Ljube Castot (VIEW,18.7 million views)
"Not Up To Me" by Kandle. Directed by Natalie Rae Robson (VIEW, 69.3k views)
Based on popularity (an astonishing 18.7 million views) and the fact that it played a key role in the incredible 2014 success story of Kiesza, the kinetic video for "Hideaway" would have to be considered a hot favourite. Still, the inclusion of a far less viewed clip by the comparatively little-known (but very worthy) Kandle does suggest that the voters in this category were guided by artistic merit in their choices. It's interesting to note that the videos cover pop, dance, hip-hop, punk, and alt-rock, showing that no one genre has a monopoly on top-notch clips.
We suggest you check out all five and place your own unofficial vote.
Also of interest is the fact that the PUP and Kandle videos also made the Top Ten shortlist of nominees for the Prism Prize for best Canadian video. The winner of that award will be announced in Toronto exactly two weeks after the JUNO Awards.
