Pique

New duo Not Of aptly describe their sound as "noise rock", and they come up with a gloriously intense collection of hard-edged noise on their debut album, Pique. Guitarist/singer John Ex and drummer/backing singer Jason Seance each achieved previous prominence in some very notable indie rock faves, but this project is a fresh start for both. They recruit The Beverleys for backing vocals on three cuts, while engineering by Mitch Bowden (Chore) and mastering by Jon Drew (Uncut) captures the sonic aggression with clarity. The half-hour running time is just perfect for music of this intensity. If the likes of Husker Du and METZ are up your alley, you must check these guys out.

Not Of launched the digital-only release at Toronto's Magpie last week. They open for The Dirty Nil at Toronto's Silver Dollar on May 29.
